Chile has defeated 10-man Switzerland 1-0 in Port Elizabeth, despite the Swiss side's setting a World Cup defensive record in Monday's Group-H match.
Switzerland set the record for most minutes played at the World Cup without conceding a goal, before a 75th-minute strike from Chile substitute Mark Gonzalez. They reached a total of 558 minutes, breaking the old mark of 550 set by Italy in 1986 and 1990.
Chile, which took over first place in the group, played with a one-man advantage after Valon Behrami was given a red card and sent off in the 31st minute. Chile now has six points, while Switzerland has three. Spain and Honduras, which play later in Johannesburg, have no points.
Earlier, Portugal crushed North Korea, 7-0 in Cape Town to move into second place in Group-G. Playing in a steady rain, Portugal had a 1-0 lead at halftime. But a second-half scoring explosion virtually assured Portugal of making the round-of-16, while ending North Korea's chances of advancing.
